Roundtable Discussion: Ethically Managing the Migration and Recruitment of Nurses in Ghana

August 18, 2023

The issue of migration and recruitment of nurses from Ghana presents a complex policy challenge which requires a balanced discussion of the causes, ethical considerations and policy implications to secure a brighter future for African nurses. Thus, the proposed roundtable convened by the Ghanaian-Diaspora Nursing Alliance will assemble local and global stakeholders with expertise in nursing, labor market analysis, healthcare workforce, nurse migration and health policy. It is essential to develop policies to manage the migration of nurses from Ghana; this includes improving working conditions in healthcare settings in Ghana and the destination countries, instituting multilateral agreements to manage the flow more effectively, and developing fair compensation arrangements between Ghana and destination countries, and developing data systems for monitor trends in the nursing workforce. Recommendations for enhancements to workforce data systems will be discussed.

Stakeholders will include the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Nursing & Midwifery Council (N&MC) Ghana, Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM), Ministry of Health, Ghana, the Ghana Health Service, the International Center on Nurse Migration/International Council of Nurses and the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Center for Global Initiatives.
